Measuring embodied carbon dioxide equivalent of buildings: A review and critique of current industry practice
نویسندگان
چکیده
Lowering the embodied carbon dioxide equivalent (embodied CO2e) of buildings is an essential response to national and global targets for carbon reduction. Globally, construction industry is developing tools, databases and practices for measuring embodied CO2e in buildings and recommending routes to reduction. While the TC350 developed standardized methods for the assessment of sustainability aspects in construction works and Environmental Product Declarations, there is no consensus on how this should be carried out in practice. This paper evaluates the current construction industry practice through a review of both academic and professional literature, and through focus groups and interviews with industry experts

Architectural Strategies to Reduce Embodied Energy in Residential Buildings in Bandar-Abbass
The most common thing that architects and engineers are trying to improve is the building's energy consumption after construction. The energy consumed in the process of building a house receives plenty of resources, so a solution to the energy problem and the most appropriate materials for a building can be selected by evaluating the energy of the construction time (Embodied Energy). In this re...
متن کاملEstimation and Minimization of Embodied Carbon of Buildings: A Review
Building and construction is responsible for up to 30% of annual global greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions, commonly reported in carbon equivalent unit. Carbon emissions are incurred in all stages of a building’s life cycle and are generally categorised into operating carbon and embodied carbon, each making varying contributions to the life cycle carbon depending on the building’s characteristics. ...
متن کاملMeasuring the Embodied Carbon Content of Concrete Paving
This paper summarises the outcomes of a PhD research project by Richardson (2009) to measure the embodied carbon content of concrete paving and to reveal the barriers to its accurate measurement. This is a current area of research due to the concerns arising from the anthropogenic emission of carbon dioxide which has been identified as a key cause of climate change. The work was carried out in ...
متن کاملUtilization of structural steel in buildings
Over one-quarter of steel produced annually is used in the construction of buildings. Making this steel causes carbon dioxide emissions, which climate change experts recommend be reduced by half in the next 37 years. One option to achieve this is to design and build more efficiently, still delivering the same service from buildings but using less steel to do so. To estimate how much steel could...
متن کاملStudy of Dioxide Carbon Concentration and Indoor Air Quality in Some Buildings in the Equatorial Region of Cameroon (Yaounde)
Background and purpose: Elevated CO2 rate in a building affect the health of occupant. This document presents results of an experimental analysis conducted in 50 offices located in 12 buildings with different layer in Cameroon (Yaounde). This study took place in 2012, during the dry and the rainy seasons. The main goal is to show the influence of the building structure, the ventilation and the ...
